The Association Agreement between the EU and Algeria entered into force in 2005 and forms the legal basis for the relationship between the EU and Algeria.

The Association Agreement priorities reflect the values and principles of the European Neighbourhood Policy, including:

  • Political dialogue, governance, rule of law and promotion of fundamental rights.

  • Co-operation, socio-economic development and trade.

  • Energy issues, environment and sustainable development.

  • Strategic and security dialogue.

  • The human dimension, including cultural and inter-religious dialogue, migration and mobility.

The new agenda for the Mediterranean, adopted by the EU on 9 February 2021, largely takes up the same identified priorities. SIGMA, the EC and the Algerian authorities agreed a work programme in December 2022 that gives priority to co-operating with:
